Hello World!

Welcome to Synaptica Central!

This morning, before officially launching this site, I had occasion to speak with some very smart folks at a small technology company in Illinois. Our conversation ranged across many semantic topics, but it was refreshing to find like minds on the topic of complexity, and it I'd like to share some of the thoughts I had coming out of the meeting.

There is no one right way to do the work that we do - building, managing and distributing controlled vocabularies of all sorts - it is an art AND a science. Relaying the value of the work can be tricky, but I believe firmly that it is work that needs doing in order to tip our online society into the next big thing. I long for the day when taxonomies are truly a commodity, as that will mean more interesting work is going on elsewhere: improving the depth of knowledge models; improving precision and recall; sharing understanding ~ making connections; generating scores of opportunities for Serendipity.

We hope that this site will be a place for sharing and learning. While we love cool technology, I would say our hearts are on the business and editorial side of the equation. We intend to share as we go - please join us on this journey! Thank you in advance for your support and feedback.

Curiously, after my teleconference, I happened up on a timely journal article thanks to a post in my Twitter feed. The leading quote was meaningful for me today; I hope you enjoy it!

I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity
but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.
